Pi Day: 3.14.15.9:26:53.5

Pure mathematics is the magician’s real wand.–Novalis

A calendric anomaly occurs tomorrow. In fact, it occurs twice. The first occurrence will be at 9:26:53.5 a.m. (carried to the half second) and again exactly 12 hours later.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 12.25.04 PMThe event is heralded as Pi Day, and it is celebrated worldwide every March 14; however, for 2015 the last two digits of the year can be incorporated into the Pi value.

Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 9:26:53.5 a.m. will be Pi to the value of 11 digits or  3.1415926535.

What does this mean? For most of us nothing, but it is a good excuse to use your knowledge of math to smile twice on Saturday shortly after  9:25.

Happy Pi Day!
